In the face of ever rising energy prices and recent national and European energy directives, modern facility management has increasingly come to focus on energy aspects in buildings. Such considerations are not only of concern when a building is upgraded or refurbished, they also feature as early as the planning and construction stages for industrial premises, office blocks, prestigious buildings or private houses.
Daylight systems are increasingly becoming a key component in building envelopes when it comes to managing energy efficiently. Four aspects are of prime importance in this respect: saving energy, conserving energy, controlling energy and generating energy.
- Saving energy: Using a great deal of sunlight, the most natural source of light, in building interiors enables electric lighting costs to be reduced considerably.
- Conserving energy: Isothermally optimised daylight structures provide effective heat insulation.
- Controlling energy: Intelligently designed control technology coordinates and harmonises components in systems controlling light direction, shade, natural ventilation and air conditioning optimisation.
- Generating energy: Integrated solar modules and photovoltaic installations enable daylight systems to actually produce energy.
