The dance of the Bolivian squirrel monkey

A symphony of animal sounds

It's so windy that I can hardly see through my blowing hair. The weather here doesn’t exactly remind you of spring. More like autumn. The sky is partly covered with dark banks of clouds. You can't call it rain, but every so often fat, heavy drops fall to the ground. It’s much colder than I thought, but as soon as I go inside I am surrounded by tropical warmth.

A symphony of animal sounds echoes throughout this place. Twittering birds provide a melody while nibbling and crawling sounds can be heard in the background. More and more animals join in. Climbing noises, chewing noises, the noise of leaves. The high-pitched peeping of Bolivian squirrel monkeys drowns out the melody of the birds and takes the lead. Things are getting louder and more complex. Soon the texture of the sound is complete, as the animals drive each other to a crescendo where I can no longer hear which sound is coming from which direction.

And suddenly everything is silent. The only thing to break the peace that follows is the gentle splashing of water. Rays of sunshine struggle their way through the cloud cover and flood the Prinz zu Wied Hall at the Neuwied Zoo. Daylight pours through the huge glass roof pyramid, reaching even the furthest corner of the tropical animal enclosure. The scent of fresh fruit, vegetables and hay tickles my nose. I keep on looking up at the sky.

I don't feel like I'm in a separate enclosure. Really not. It’s more like I’m actually standing outside somewhere in the tropics. Surrounded by palms and trees, wrapped in warm, humid air. The scent of nature in my nose, the sounds of the animals in my ears and the sparkling rays of sunshine on my skin. And all that with no risk of sunburn. Neuwied Zoo is definitely worth a visit. It's one of the most special places I found in my search for the most beautiful daylight.
