LAMILUX wins German Design Award 2026 in Gold

Energy generation through award-winning glass architecture

Combining openness, sustainability, design and quality in a single building element is one of the most pressing challenges in contemporary architecture. LAMILUX has succeeded in doing so with the Glass Roof PR60 with integrated photovoltaics, which has now been honoured with the German Design Award 2026 in Gold. The jury recognises a solution that demonstrates how energy production can be made visible in architecture while being convincingly integrated within the overall design. The system opens up new possibilities for architects and planners who aim to harmonise daylight, energy generation and individual expression.

Architecture and sustainability intelligently combined

The LAMILUX Glass Roof with photovoltaics integration is a further development of the well-known Glass Roof PR60 system – but with a clear objective: to understand photovoltaics not as an add-on technology, but as an integral part of the roof surface itself. The system is manufactured in the glass-module-glass construction: the solar cells are embedded between two panes of glass and thus permanently protected. With configurable dimensions, transparency levels and performance classes, the system can be adapted to a wide range of architectural concepts. Whether designed as a glass dome, pyramid or free geometry – the PR60 remains flexible in form and precise in construction, making it an optimal solution for complex refurbishment projects.
The system also demonstrates its strengths in terms of functionality. Ventilation elements as well as smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems can be seamlessly integrated into the glass roof. To reinforce the product's sustainability focus, excellent insulation values make it possible to achieve energy efficiency classes up to Passivhaus standard. This makes the system ideal for demanding construction projects with ambitious energy performance targets.

LAMILUX honoured as a German Design Award 2026 winner

The high-quality construction, design flexibility and seamless photovoltaics integration also convinced the jury of the German Design Awards. The internationally renowned prize honours products that combine design and technical innovation in an outstanding way. In the category “Building and Elements”, the jury evaluates architectural relevance, construction quality and the contribution to sustainable building concepts. The LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 with integrated photovoltaics fulfilled these criteria in essential aspects: the solar technology becomes part of the roof surface without compromising transparency or architectural lines – an approach that, according to the jury, exemplifies how energy generation can be integrated into the building envelope.

“We wanted to create a system that elegantly combines sustainable power generation, summer heat protection and natural daylight,” explains LAMILUX technology expert Stefan Valentin. “The fact that the jury has recognized precisely these aspects with a Gold award is particularly gratifying for us.”

First reference project in use

How the award-winning system performs in real-world applications can be seen in the Eggenhalle in Munich-Pasing. The former industrial hall was transformed by Behnisch Architekten into a modern action sports venue. The 229 m² gable roof, constructed from PR60 elements, integrates 136 PV modules and achieves a total output of 25.13 kWp. The photovoltaics area blends seamlessly into the existing roof geometry, preserving the identity of the historic steel structure while adding clear energetic value. The hall serves as a prime example of how photovoltaics integration in architecture can succeed – without design compromise, with strong functional performance and as a natural part of a contemporary refurbishment.
