LAMILUX: Glass Skylight FE wastes no time in winning multiple design awards

It's only been on the market since April and it’s already received four awards: The new LAMILUX Glass Skylight FE impressed the juries of the Red Dot Award, the German Design Award and the Plus X Award (twice in fact). But even func-tionally, the skylight has been modified once again to ensure that it now offi-cially offers Passivhaus classification and conditional accessibility.

Passivhaus classification phC

Inherent Passivhaus suitability: The Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt recently certified the LAMILUX Glass Skylight FE for this quality. It was given the phC certi-fication class. However, the manufacturer's developers are currently working on an even more efficient variant, which also seeks to achieve phA class – a class which already includes a continuous rooflight, a glass roof system and another glass skylight from LAMILUX.

Fall-through protection and conditional accessibility

As per DIN 18008-6, two qualities apply to the glazing of the new skylight: Firstly, the glazing can be accessed for maintenance and cleaning purposes. Secondly, the glazing provides fall-through protection if it is not accessed as intended, but is located close to areas that can be accessed for maintenance purposes.

Red Dot Award

The Glass Skylight FE recently received the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019, which the renowned jury only awards to products with a magnificent design.  Professor Dr Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of Red Dot, said of the winners: “I con-gratulate the winners on their great success. The fact that their products were able to withstand the strict judgement of the jury is testament to their excellent design quality. In this way, the winners are establishing decisive trends in the design industry and showing the way for the future."

Two Plus X Awards

The jury of the Plus X Awards awarded two prizes to the skylight: the "Product of the Year” special prize and the "Innovation, High Quality, Design, Operating Ease and Functionality" prize. In their own words, the Plus X Award is the world's largest innovation award for technology, sport and lifestyle. It recognises brands for the quality and innovative edge of their products.

German Design Award

LAMILUX also received the coveted German Design Award in the "Building and Elements" category for its Glass Skylight FE: The internationally renowned award acknowledges the use of novel joining technology that creates the elegant look of the glass element.

About the Glass Skylight FE

The appearance of the new glass element is consistent throughout, with no connecting elements to spoil the view. This is because the production of the skylight involved a new joining technology, allowing the frame sections to be joined at the corners without any visible screw fittings or welding seams. LAMILUX also uses structural glazing technology, in which the glass pane and frame are bonded rather than clamped. This allows rainwater and dirt to simply run off all four sides of the flat roof window's planar surface.

The integration of all drives, power adapters, cables and other components into the frame of the skylight is also invisible. A look at the element inside the building reveals no motors or concealer panels. This degree of design freedom comes in part from the range of customised spe-cial shapes and a broad portfolio of glazing and sizes up to 2.5 metres, as well as an extensive choice of exterior and interior colours for the skylight.
