Renovation of the Eggenhalle Munich with LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60
From industrial monument to action sports hall
The listed Eggenhalle in Munich’s Pasing district has undergone an impressive transformation: from an industrial relic to a modern action sports hall – usable in all weather conditions for skaters and BMX riders. The centrepiece of the architectural redesign is the approximately 229-square-metre LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 in gable roof form, which combines several requirements: seamless integration into listed building structures, daylight entry, ventilation, fire protection and sustainable energy generation.
Where agricultural machinery was once produced, skateboards now roll across the concrete floor: The Eggenhalle in Pasing has undergone a remarkable transformation. For decades, the delicately constructed industrial hall stood empty until it was placed under preservation order in 2008 – and now, around one and a half decades later, has been given new life as an all-weather action sports centre for BMX riders and skaters.
The conversion was planned by Behnisch Architekten and implemented together with the City of Munich and the future users. What was special here: the goal was not to construct a new hall, but to carefully renovate an existing building with character. “This beautiful hall simply stood empty for decades,” recalls partner Maria Hirnsperger. “Let’s be honest – the building fabric didn’t get any better as a result!”
New light for building refurbishment
Particular attention was paid to renewing the skylight – one of the defining elements of the historic building. A standard product would not have met the requirements of monument preservation. The choice therefore fell on the individually designed Glass Roof PR60 from LAMILUX, which, with its delicate construction, replicates the original appearance.
“It was very important to us to replicate this old structure, with T-profiles and hollow profiles, exactly as the original skylight in the Eggenhalle had been designed,” says Hirnsperger. The fact that LAMILUX acted not only as a system supplier but also as a development partner was particularly appreciated: “We found it very pleasant to have a sparring partner where you could tell they were also keen to do something special.”
Daylight, energy and ventilation
Today, the new skylight is not only a central design element – it also fulfils several technical functions: it brings abundant daylight into the interior while simultaneously harnessing natural light for energy generation. The photovoltaic elements integrated into the glazing of 136 glass panes contribute to electricity production and sustainable building operation with a total output of 25.13 kWp. At the same time, the modules provide summer heat protection.
“We especially wanted to show the young user group that you can integrate photovoltaics into a listed building,” explains Hirnsperger. Another special feature: the hall is ventilated purely naturally – via louvre windows below and motor-operated ventilation flaps in the LAMILUX glass roof. “When the lower windows are opened, the warm air rises and escapes through the roof glazing’s ventilation flaps, like a small solar chimney.”
In the event of fire, the LAMILUX PR60 ventilation flaps also serve as smoke extraction – controlled via sensors and triggering mechanisms.
Light as a design element
Daylight entering through the new glass roof has become the defining feature of the space. “When we first saw this hall, it was immediately clear: this skylight, this light incidence, that’s what defines its character,” recalls Hirnsperger. The aim was to restore the original interplay of light and shadow – albeit in a modern, energy-optimised form.
The users also benefit from the atmosphere: “You have an incredible amount of space, you feel the height of the room, and everything is perfectly illuminated by the glass roof,” reports skate instructor Julian Eberle from the High Five association.
LAMILUX as an enabler for demanding conversions
With the implementation of the customised Glass Roof PR60, LAMILUX demonstrates how daylight systems can be intelligently combined in existing buildings – with heritage protection, user comfort and energy efficiency. The Eggenhalle becomes a showcase project for sustainable refurbishment with architectural ambition.
