The core of the newly built library of the University of Darmstadt is an extravagant polygonal glass roof structure on a post-and-rail base. Thus, the study rooms are flooded with daylight generously. The 15° inclined arrangement of the diamond-shaped glass panes in combination with the structure of the interior construction underneath, results in an interesting architectural effect.
The single roof field lines are interrupted by accessible gutters. The diamond-shaped opening flaps which are embedded in frequent spaces allow for ventilation and also for natural smoke and heat exhaust ventilation.
