Modern working environments under glass –
British Sugar Peterborough

Daylight for productive workspaces

A central light-filled space as the heart of the new building: the British Sugar headquarters in Peterborough demonstrates how the targeted use of daylight shapes modern working environments and sustainably enhances communication, concentration and overall comfort.

Openness and structure in harmony

With its new headquarters, British Sugar has created a working environment that combines transparency, orientation and efficiency. At the centre of the building is a spacious atrium that serves as a connecting space for interaction and exchange. The LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 spanning above brings daylight evenly deep into the open-plan office areas, creating a bright and clear atmosphere.

Daylight as a productivity factor

Natural light has been proven to have a positive effect on concentration, well-being and communication. At the British Sugar headquarters, this effect is used deliberately: the glass roof ensures uniform illumination of the workspaces while reducing the need for artificial lighting.

This creates a working environment that not only performs functionally but also supports daily collaboration.

Technical precision meets architectural lightness

The glass roof extends over an area of approximately 12 × 16 metres and consists of 72 glass panes. Despite a total weight of 13,000 kilograms, the structure appears light and understated.

The slim aluminium profiles have been colour-matched to the architecture and blend harmoniously into the overall design – a strong example of the successful combination of technology and design.

Safety and comfort in the background

In addition to its architectural impact, the glass roof also meets the highest requirements in terms of safety and building technology. A total of 16 integrated SHEV units ensure reliable smoke extraction in the event of a fire, as well as natural ventilation during daily operation.

Architecture that supports collaboration

The project demonstrates how architecture can actively contribute to the quality of working processes. The atrium becomes the central meeting point within the building – a space that provides orientation and brings people together.

The glass roof plays a key role: it not only brings light into the building but also gives the space an open and inspiring character. The result is a modern working environment that balances functionality and well-being.
