Mobility under one roof
Frankfurt Airport railway station connects rail and air travel at one of Germany’s most important transport hubs. Every day, large numbers of passengers use the platforms as a link between the airport, long-distance rail services and regional connections. As part of a phased expansion and architectural enhancement programme, the existing station complex was extended with two new Glass Roofs.

Architecture as part of the expansion
The two barrel-vaulted PR60 Glass Roofs were developed as an integral part of the station’s architectural concept and blend seamlessly into the existing structure. Measuring 12 metres in width and 47 metres in length, each roof spans the platform areas, creating a modern and open spatial experience. Their curved form reflects the station’s design language and helps integrate the extension harmoniously into the overall architectural appearance.

Daylight and comfort on the platforms
The large glazed surfaces bring natural daylight onto the platforms, creating bright and welcoming waiting areas. This enhances both safety and orientation for travellers amid the daily activity of the station. To ensure a comfortable environment beneath the Glass Roofs, solar control glazing was installed. It helps maintain balanced lighting conditions and allows the platform areas to remain comfortable even during periods of intense sunlight.

Safety in daily operation
In addition to comfort and architectural quality, safety was a key consideration throughout the planning process. A total of 16 SHEV units were integrated into the Glass Roofs, forming an important part of the station’s overall safety concept. In a heavily frequented transport facility with high passenger volumes, reliable safety solutions are of particular importance. The daylighting solution therefore combines architectural quality, occupant comfort and safety at one of Germany’s most important transport hubs.

Precision under challenging conditions
The project placed considerable demands on planning and logistics. Due to its location within the airport’s security zone, extensive security requirements had to be met and all work processes carefully coordinated. At the same time, normal station operations remained fully operational throughout the construction phase. Installation was carried out by LAMILUX predominantly during night-time hours, ensuring that disruption to travellers was kept to a minimum. The result is a daylighting solution that demonstrates LAMILUX’s ability to successfully deliver complex projects even under highly demanding conditions.
