Tradition meets modern learning environments

King’s College is one of the United Kingdom’s most renowned independent schools. Since its foundation in 1829, it has stood for academic excellence and the holistic development of its pupils. Today, around 1,500 young people study on the extensive Wimbledon campus, which combines modern teaching, sports and music facilities.

Alongside traditional classrooms, creative and musical activities play an important role in everyday school life. As a result, the requirements for building design and the quality of the learning environment are particularly high.

Customised daylight architecture

To meet the diverse requirements of the school buildings, an individual daylighting solution was realised. Above the foyer, an L-shaped LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 creates a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The flexible design of the Glass Roof enabled harmonious integration into the existing architecture while supporting the open design of the interior spaces.

Optimal conditions for music and learning

The school’s music hall presented particular requirements. To create ideal conditions for teaching, rehearsals and performances, room acoustics played a central role from the earliest planning stages. Six LAMILUX Flat Roof Windows FE bring natural daylight into the music hall and were simultaneously integrated into a roof concept with additional acoustic insulation. The result is a learning environment that combines natural daylight with the demanding acoustic requirements of modern music spaces.

Comfort for teaching and events

In addition to high levels of daylight, the daylighting solution supports the flexible use of the music hall. Internal blackout systems allow lighting conditions to be adjusted as required, while the high acoustic insulation contributes to a pleasant learning and working environment.

Three of the six Flat Roof Windows were designed as openable elements, enabling natural ventilation of the space. This creates optimal conditions for teaching, musical rehearsals and school performances.
